The Project Manager (PM), also called Development Director (DD) at EA, is a critical role and responsible for ensuring the successful delivery of a game, on time and within budget. Prior to production they carry out a detailed analysis of the game design and work out the project ‘milestones’ (specific targets that have to be met by certain dates), agreeing upon these with the key technical and creative managers, such as the Game Designer, Art Director and Lead Programmer. The PM/DD then works out a schedule for the project and decides the personnel and equipment needed. They control the financial resources and negotiate all contracts with suppliers and contractors. Once development is underway, the PM/DD monitors the team’s progress against the schedule. They must be able to prioritize when production deadlines are a concern, manage risks, and plan for contingencies. Finally, the PM / DD is responsible for all people management on the team and entasked with motivating and developing all staff under their management and develop their career.
Role Overview
An EA Development Director Level helps provide daily team leadership. Key responsibilities include: interpret design documents and establish a clear picture of project scope and create accurate development estimates; monitoring change requests and predicting/seeing significant changes to project scope and updating appropriate parties; interpret a project schedule and monitor the progress of individual tasks against that schedule and reporting schedule variances to the appropriate parties; procure necessary resources based on established needs; regularly reviews performance and holds timely discussions; provides day-to-day coaching and mentoring to team (career coaching, time management etc.) and works in conjunction with direct manager to resolve any team issues; provides career counseling to team members' and communicates desires and career ambitions to senior management; works with senior management on recruiting efforts; coordinating interviews, candidate assessment and provides feedback to senior management for hiring decisions; motivates team members and provides ongoing coaching and support; responsible for effectively dealing with minor production problems and co-ordinating staff towards a resolution; participate in the departmental strategic and tactical planning process (with the assistance of departmental leads); identifies gaps in existing departmental processes and recommends and implements viable process
What skills does EA look for??
An EA Development Director is expected to have 4 years of software development experience; 2 years Project Management or Project Coordination experience; 1-2 years of leadership experience; strong negotiation, mediation and conflict resolution skills; effective communication skills across all levels of an organization. Education background should include a Degree in Computer Science or equivalent.
