Director, Art

Relic Entertainment, award winning developers of Homeworld, Dawn of War, Company of Heroes, and our highly anticipated third person shooter,Space Marine has a fantastic opportunity for a passionate and experienced Director, Art.

The Director, Art is responsible at the studio level for the maintenance and growth of the Art culture at Relic. The culture is built around an expectation for artistic excellence, innovation and high levels of productivity.

Equally important to the position is the growth of each artist’s skills through mentoring, education, and direction. The Director is responsible for maintaining and advancing the standards, processes and procedures related to art at Relic.

To succeed in this role, the Director must be able to set and articulate a vision for the studio, and work to help others achieve it within the games. The Director will review and evaluate artistic designs and decisions and work with the Lead Artist and Project Producer to resolve flaws.
RESPONSIBILITIES:

* Establish and communicate a consistent and visionary bar for art within Relic, and work continuously to push the studio forward
* Sets and is accountable for the implementation of short (0-1 year) and long term (1-5) year strategic and functional objectives
* Serve as constant internal game critic – be solution oriented and industry savvy in order to help guide our leaders to better decisions
* Create and maintain the standards, processes and procedures related to the art discipline
* Provide active and on-going communication regarding the state of the art group and projects at Relic, and review staffing plans regularly and proactively
* Keep up-to-date on related art tools (software and otherwise) with a focus on recommendations regarding their use at Relic
* Mentor artists, supplying them with direction regarding Relic standards, procedures, processes, pipelines, tools, etc. This role can include demonstrations, feedback, written procedures, etc.
* Ensure the ongoing training and development of all Relic artists by maintaining and improving their art skills via suggested reading, design forums, suggested conventions, etc.
* Assist the Producers and Lead Artists in writing and presenting performance reviews for the artists
* Maintain and update the artist job descriptions as well as participate in the hiring process for all art positions at Relic
* Act as a strategic liaison with management, other departments in the company, as well as 3rd party vendors


REQUIREMENTS:

* A broad knowledge and interest in console and PC games
* Very high level of personal game art success – industry recognized
* 10+ years as an Artist in the industry
* 8+ product cycles with at least 3 product cycles in a major role of responsibility
* Very strong written and oral communication skills
* 5 years direct employee management experience
* Proven ability at successful multi tasking under considerable pressure
* Proven leadership and mentorship abilities
* College degree or equivalent relevant schooling
