Director, Technology

Relic Entertainment – Critically acclaimed strategy games, best known for
Homeworld, Company of Heroes & Dawn of War franchises is looking for a
Director, Technology.

The Director will be working closely with the management team and Lead
Programmers on each of the projects in development; you will forge the path and
drive the technical vision for Relic. During both project planning and
implementation, you will assist in coordinating technical aspects of all
disciplines, both short and long term, to ensure successful completion of
project, unit, and corporate goals. To maximize the release of successful
projects, you will also recommend qualified and timely engineering resource
allocations.

Responsibilities

• In conjunction with GM, set technology goals and plans for studio.
• In conjunction with Lead Programmers, help set technology direction and
architecture for all studio projects (including Tools Group).
• Contributes as a Lead programming resource on specific game development
projects.
• Foster external relationships with key contacts and partners in the industry.
• Facilitate inter-project communication and technology sharing.
• Monitor all studio projects and anticipate, identify and articulate
problem/risk areas and work with leads to develop solutions.
• Assist with recruitment of technical team.
• Administer performance reviews.
• Review and evaluate internal/external products for compatibility with company
objectives and technical design direction.
• Keep Relic’s technology leading edge – explore new methods, ideas and
technology, perform relevant research, read white papers and tech journals, and
provide competitive technology benchmarking and analysis.
• Assist the programming team in setting objectives – prioritize objectives and
be the visionary, mentor and coach to achieve objectives.
• Work with the Lead Programmers to ensure the career paths and skill sets of
the programming department align with the studio’s evolving requirements via
training, recruiting, and mentoring.

Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or equivalent
• 10+ years of programming experience, 7+ years making games
• Experience with console and/or (ideally AND) PC development
• Very high level of personal technical achievement – industry recognized
• Thorough command of applicable programming languages and software design
practices
• Excellent knowledge of C++/ STL and current code development tools
• Proven ability at successful multitasking under considerable pressure
• Proven leadership and problem solving ability
• Excellent interpersonal skills
• Proven project management skills
• Strong communication skills – you may speak geek, but not everyone else does!
You need to be able to communicate with people from all disciplines.
• Strong resource planning skills - effective at identifying opportunities to
share resources and identify required skill sets to ensure Relic stays on the
cutting edge
