Environment Artist

Epic Games, the award winning developer known for the Unreal Series of games, Gears of War, and the Unreal Engine, is searching for an experienced Environment Artist.

Responsibilities

In this role, you will be constructing aesthetically groundbreaking and technically advanced environments that match Epic’s engrossing gameplay experiences. You should have a combination of strong creative/visual aesthetics and technical knowledge and the ability to realize a 3d world using existing environment assets along with your own creations. You should be an expert in every aspect of the environmental creation pipeline - from early planning and asset modeling, to level decoration, lighting, optimization and everything in-between. You are able to think outside the box to come up with techniques that work better, smarter or faster.

Qualifications

  • Experience crafting stunning visuals for next generation game environments
  • Experience in all aspects of creating environmental game content inside Maya/Max
  • Experience with various software packages including Photoshop, Zbrush/Mudbox
  • Experience working with Unreal Engine 3 a plus

 

Expected Tasks

 

 

Environment layout, aesthetics and polish

  • Need to exhibit good color theory and technical expertise in architectural layout, lighting, scene composition, and environmental FX polish (bloom, color adjust, fog, etc. ...)
  • Proficiency in three dimensional layout, and spatial composition

Content creation

  • Modeling and texturing experience is key
  • Creative modeling that can take a rudimentary or unfinished concept and understand the gestalt of the design and model three dimensional assets from it
  • Designing and creating new assets that inspire is a must
  • Creating solid, high fidelity textures of any given surface is required
  • An expertise in architectural and organic modeling is paramount

Shader Creation

  • Creating shaders for environment assets, volumetrics, decals, ambient effects, etc.
  • Complex, technical shader knowledge and background is a plus
  • Optimization
  • Use diagnostic tools to examine content and identify areas for improvement
  • Know when and where to cut and how to most effectively optimize meshes and materials, without compromising visual quality
