Microsoft Studios is looking for a talented, motivated and experienced senior designer with proven leadership ability to work with external developers on Microsoft’s core titles, including shooters, RPGs, action/adventure, etc.


While the senior designer will work most closely with the design director, s/he will be expected to interact with the key franchise stake holders, including the MS executive producer and external partners to ensure AAA game quality. Providing actionable and concrete feedback along with the passion and temperance to sell that feedback to our creative partners is a must. The ideal candidate will also have a proven track record in hands-on design tasks such as laying out levels, tuning characters, designing and tuning reward and unlock systems, etc.


Qualified individuals are expected to be organized, with excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and have a proven track record in AAA game design. Strong problem solving and interpersonal skills along with positive creative energy are also important components of a strong candidate. Applicants must have a clear understanding and experience creating mission/environment design, AI, combat, strategy, game-flow, and balance. Candidates must be well versed in market trends and styles.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Collaborate and work closely with the design director, MS leads and external partners to ensure AAA quality game.

- Provide concrete and actionable feedback to external developers/teams to ensure both quality and timeliness.

- Own the design relationship between Microsoft and the external partner.

- Use feedback from personal play-throughs, usability and gameplay studies to improve the game in a meaningful way.

- Inspire, motivate, and mentor other designers in best practices, processes, and procedures pertaining to production.

- Help to develop level layouts, flow, balancing and training, within the limits specified by the design and technical limits of the target platform.

- Be prepared and comfortable working directly in the tool suite to prototype ideas, layout levels, tune enemies and bosses, debug level scripts.

- Be able to run meetings and drive action items through to completion.


QUALIFICATIONS:

- AA/BA/BS preferred. At minimum, the candidate must be able to demonstrate through portfolio an industry standard level of design.

- 8 + years minimum industry experience.

- Minimum of 2 Shipped AAA titles with at least one current console generation title.

- Familiarity with engines and common designer tools-Unreal, Unity, Crytek, etc.

- Passion for the industry and an understanding of market trends and styles.

- Have a proactive work ethic, capable and creative problem solver who is not afraid of big challenges.

- Have a strong ability to multitask, following through on a wide variety and number of tasks from inception to completion.
