Sr Designer – EA SPORTS - Football
Role Overview
We are seeking a Senior Designer to drive the creative design for the production of one or our football properties. The designer will work collaboratively with the Senior Producer and Art Director to define the overall creative vision of the game. The designer will be responsible for defining and working with the team to realize a compelling user game experience. This includes its setting, structure, rules, challenges, characters, objects, modes and features, as well as the user interface design.
Originality and creativity are highly valued, but a thorough knowledge of a game’s target audience and market is equally if not more important. The designer should also have a deep understanding of the capabilities and benefits of different hardware platforms (e.g., PC, console, mobile devices), as well as familiarity with software technologies and techniques appropriate to each platform.
It is the Designer’s responsibility to ensure that the whole team understands and is aligned on the creative concept and vision of the game. During development, the Designer will likely need to make adjustments to the original specifications in order to respond to feedback and technical constraints as well as to incorporate new programming and art creation methods developed by the team. However, the designer must ensure the core of the vision is never diluted. As development continues and as the team grows, the Designer works closely with the lead programmers, artists, and designers to ensure all the code and art assets produced, as well as playable versions of the game, meet the initial vision at a high quality
Lastly, the Designer will be responsible for enhancing existing technologies as well as designing new system architectures and features for EA SPORTS titles.
What skills does EA look for???
For this role we’ll be looking for a designer with experience in communicating a comprehensive vision of a full game experience. Must have a passion for games and a good understanding of what makes a game appealing to different audiences. They must possess imagination, creativity, and problem-solving skills, as well as excellent communication and presentation skills.
Setting priority and expectations as well as leading by example to accomplish the vision will be important. The Designer must be able to work closely and collaboratively with multi-disciplinary teams of programmers, artists, project managers, writers, musicians, marketers, and many others. They must be able to communicate their vision effectively, both up and down. This involves presenting their ideas verbally in a one on one situation, through presentations to larger audiences, as well as electronically and on paper. Good presentation skills are therefore critical.
When looking for Game Designers, EA values a thorough understanding of gameplay theory and candidates must display logical and strategic thinking as well as imagination and creativity. The ideal candidate possesses information and user interface design skills. They must be able to work both as part of a team and independently. Prior experience in any related game development discipline, including Art, Engineering, or Testing is also a plus. Candidates should be reasonably familiar with art and animation pipelines, such as a range of 2D and 3D graphics and animation packages like Motion Builder and Maya. Experience with software similar to Unreal Editor or, Valve software’s “Hammer” a big plus. Good technical knowledge is required, as is some basic programming skills, at least at ‘scripting’ level, and awareness of the various games platforms and technologies.
The ideal candidate will have a reasonably high level of industry experience and knowledge. EA usually expects to see a portfolio of work, which can take the form of completed game projects or written game design documents and proposals. A portfolio consisting on Sports games and/or a passion for Sports is required. From an educational perspective, Game Designers may have studied a range of subjects, from the sciences and humanities to art and design. There are also a growing number of games-related degree programs and courses available for study, and a degree in this type of program would be a plus.
