EA SPORTS games like Tiger Woods™, Madden™ and FIFA™ have pioneered the use of Motion Capture technology. The Mo-Cap Artist is a relatively new role in which the artist uses a laser-scanning machine or complex video capture software to generate a very high detail 3D model. After capturing the motion of an athlete or other character, the Mo-Cap Artist then does hand-repairs and enhances the 3D character so the character looks absolutely photorealistic. Gamers expect their favorite sports figures to look, move, and feel in the game just as they do in real life. It’s up to the Mo-Cap Artist to make sure this happens.
Role Overview
The Team Lead for MoCap’s data services team is responsible for the successful delivery of motion capture data to EA game teams world wide. The Team Lead will handle the day-to-day and overall management of team schedules and timelines, as well as forecast for future capacity within the team. The Team Lead must be able to prioritize when production deadlines are a concern, manage risks, and plan for contingencies. Finally, the Team Lead is responsible for all people management on the team and is tasked with motivating and developing all staff under their management and develop their career.
Responsibilities
• Completion and delivery of tracked and solved motion capture data to all of EA’s world-wide clients
• Owning the QA process to ensure staff deliver high quality data to Lead Specs/clients
• Working with the Development Director to established clear goals for Post-Production Staff
• Project resourcing and load balancing for all mocap tracking, solving and special projects (R&D;, testing, evaluation etc…) to maintain Service Level Agreements (SLAs) and overall productivity targets. Own mechanisms used to place jobs into the queue, track job progress, and communicate with the lead spec regarding delivery. Proactively identify & communicate risks, contribute to solutions.
• Determining the best use of outsourcing and managing the outsourcing process with our partner
• Evaluate and communicate concerns/risks and offer solutions with Lead Specialists
• On-going analysis and management of time, scope, resources, quality, staff skill-set and technology needs
• Identifying and planning efficiency tools to continually improve output
• Maintaining and improving infrastructure of the team and its processes through staff training, documentation, IT maintenance etc…
• Organize and execute staff evaluations; grow rising stars
• Ownership, maintenance and enforcement of all standards and metrics (e.g. productivity, efficiency, timelog, quality, feedback, etc…)
What skills does EA look for??
• 2-3 year experience managing & measuring art and/or software staff as direct reports
• 2-3 years experience mining and analyzing team metrics (productivity, quality etc…) in a software environment
• 1 year experience managing outsourced production
• Expert in capacity/resource planning, scheduling, and risk management across multiple projects or programs
• Demonstrated experience managing multiple projects in a highly technical environment
• High-level of customer service and flexibility
• Displays a high-level of ownership and problem solving capability
• Experience gathering and presenting metrics and creating roadmaps that tie to metrics goals and customer needs, as well as delivering upon those goals and needs
• Ability to manage and grow teams of junior staff through leadership and experience
• Leads with a can-do attitude with a strong drive to succeed
• Proficient with MS Word, MS Project, Excel, PowerPoint, and Visio
• An understanding of Python or MEL scripting is an asset
