User Research Engineer

Microsoft Studios User Research is looking for passionate user researchers to be part of a cutting-edge team shaping the future of a wide-range of entertainment products. Apply your passion for research, digital entertainment, and games to the development of fun and innovative user experiences for Xbox 360, Kinect, Windows and Windows phone. Plan and conduct strategic research to help broaden the appeal of Microsoft’s entertainment products, and work closely with design and production teams to integrate usability and research into the development process.
Primary responsibilities:
Plan and conduct user research activities for new entertainment products and established video game franchises.
Work closely with the product teams to understand the product goals and strategies, and develop a complimentary research plan that will impact product design and quality.
Gather and interpret data from lab studies, surveys, instrumentation and usage logs.
Communicate all results to the team and provide recommendations and ongoing design consultation.
Additional responsibilities:
Develop long-term user research plans and schedules.
Evaluate product design and UI, establish methods assessing user engagement and likelihood to purchase and consume entertainment products.
Present research findings and design recommendations verbally and in written reports.
Develop user flows including low-fidelity UI mockups.
Qualifications:
Advanced degrees in experimental psychology (experimental, social, cognitive, etc.), human computer interaction, human factors, computer science or a related field, or equivalent industry experience.
Experience in the game development, consumer, or entertainment software industry is highly desirable but not required.
Required skills:
Knowledgeable in research design, fluent in a wide range of qualitative and quantitative methodologies and be able to quickly and effectively analyze and present data to influence product design and implementation. These methodologies may include discount and RITE usability studies, field studies, questionnaire development and survey research, usage log analysis, and competitive benchmarking.
Excellent written and oral communication skills, persuasiveness, and the ability to make group presentations.
General knowledge of and interest in a wide range of digital entertainment products and video games.
Insight into game design principles is also highly desirable.
Some travel (including international travel) may occasionally be required.
